Berkshire 7s Full Match Report
Thursday, 08 May 2008

Redingensians won a thrilling final against Bracknell in the Berkshire 7s on Tuesday evening (6th May) to lift the trophy for the first time in the Club’s history and break Bracknell’s 7 year stranglehold on the competition.

Some skilful footwork and blistering pace from Chandler opened the scoring for Redingensians but a bungled conversion attempt by Amor restricted the score to 5 – 0.  McKay (who has returned to Bracknell from Maidenhead) replied for the holders, which went unconverted to leave the scores equal.

Reynolds then put Gensians back ahead with a sprint to the corner, which was again unconverted, but Bracknell replied again and this time converted to make the score 12 – 10 in Bracknell’s favour.  Matt Reed, who has only just returned from injury after a major shoulder operation in July last year, shook off the rust and showed the class that the Old Bath Road men have missed this season by cutting through Bracknell’s defence to score under the post and after converting his own try gave Gensians’ a 17-12 half time lead.

Reed set things alight immediately after half time by outsprinting Bracknell’s defence to score in the corner and a conversion from Reynolds extended the Old Bath Rd men’s lead.  But Bracknell struck back again with an unconverted Novak try and then another try, this time converted,  to set the scores at 24 – 24. A moment of brilliance and flare from Flynn created space for Gensians’ skipper Andrew Amor to go through the formality of walking in a try to make the final score 29 – 24 to Redingensians.

Redingensians’ got to the final by beating Maidenhead, Camberley, Henley Wanderers and Reading in the Semi-final

Bracknell got to the final by beating Reading, Abbey, Berkshire Under 20s and Maidenhead in the Semi-final.

Berkshire Under 20s played some super rugby to beat Camberley in the plate final.
